Honourkeeper - new dwarf novel

Okay, so after a few false starts whilst working on some last minute projects (and getting chapter three of Wyrd Dreams written), I have begun in earnest on Honourkeeper, my next dwarf novel.

I'm about two chapters in (nearly 7,000 words) at the moment, and have set aside most of today for finishing off chapter two and kicking off chapter three. For those not in the know, this story is set just before the War of Vengeance and includes elves in its list of protagonists. The tale is stand alone and doesn't link in to Oathbreaker (though I may do a follow-up to that novel, should it prove popular enough), so even if you've not picked that up it won't matter.

Okay, that's about it for now as I should be spending my time writing the novel and not blogging! :-)

Woo, more dwarf goodness on the way!

So are dwarfs your favourite aspect of the Warhammer background? Did you decide to write this or were you approached and asked to work on another dwarf novel?

Do you find it easier and more interesting to write about an army you collect (I seem to recall you collect dwarfs)?

Best of luck with the novel, and remember writing instead of answering annoying comments on your blog!

Andy.

Hey Andy,

Glad you're excited about the new novel and that (presumably) you enjoyed Oathbreaker. I'm about 10,000 words in at the moment and in the process of doing some tweaking before I move on to the next major scene.

You're right about dwarfs, they are indeed my favourite Warhammer race. Have been since I bought a blister pack of Marauder Miniatures Longbeards in the 80's. That day my nascent dwarf army was born... But there's also a little truth in the fact that we (BL) wanted a dwarf novel and, as a bit of an expert on the sons of Grungni, and an aspiring author, I was asked to do it. This kind of spurred me on to write more dwarf novels, as we didn't have anything devoted purely to them (aside from G&F, but that's kind of its onw beast, really). I guess I do find it easy to write about them, because I have such a lot of knowledge already, and they do occupy a special place in my hobbyist's heart, for sure. To be honest though, if you do your research, it's easy to get passionate about most subjects. The more you learn about it, the greater the story possibilities become and the more like you feel you have some ownership of it, and authority (good subject for a blog post, methinks - thanks!).

Thanks for commenting, Andy - you're welcome anytime (and you weren't annoying at all. You've actually inspired a subject for a post!).

I am indeed enjoying Oathbreaker. Sadly I haven't had as much time as I'd like to read recently, but I'll get a review to you when I'm done - and also post one on the BL site.

I think it's always good when an author writes about what he loves, and I think it shows in the work. It's very interesting to see what inspires people to fall in love with one particular aspect of the background or collect an army. I've been drawn into collecting an army based on artwork or a piece of fiction alone ... So if I end up collecting dwarfs you'll have my other half to answer to!

Hmm. Maybe I'll start that planned Kraka Drak army after all...

:D

Hi (again) Nick,

A quick note to say a couple of things:
- Not long finished Oathbreaker and I have to say: I really enjoyed it! (I felt some work was needed on both the enemies and the characters of the dwarfs individually, but altogether it was still a damn fine novel)
- In light of that, I'm happily looking forward to Honourkeeper

And now for a question!

Will there ever be a dwarf-based novel that doesn't come with a double-name ending '-er'? Grudgebearer. Honourkeeper. Brewmaster. Axewielder. Beardtrimmer?

As an offhand (second) question, couldn't Honourkeeper (and therefore most 'War of Vengence-era' novels) be a Time of Legends novel?

Hey Xisor,

Glad you liked the book!

In response to your questions.

1. Yes, there will, one day, be a dwarf novel without an 'er' ending. It's just that the three in existence at present do riff rather well together :-). A small piece of related trivia for you: the original title for Oathbreaker was going to be 'Doom of Karak Varn'.

2. I guess, technically, the book could be Time of Legends as it is set a long time in the Warhammer past. It doesn't really have legendary characters, though. What I mean by that is ToL books will have recognisable protagonists or well known events and Oathbreaker details more of a side event - it isn't really world shaping, if you see what I mean.
