Salamander reaches 80,000 word mark
I've been hard at work over the last few days, hammering the keyboard like crazy to get more chapters of Salamander finished.
I'm very happy to reach the 80,000 word mark, as it means I'm entering into the final phase or act of the novel. There are quite a few reveals coming to fruition now, so all that set up in the earlier chapters is paying off at last.
Still not sure just how long this novel is going to be yet. Though, I think it will breach the 100,000 word mark by a fair few thousand - let's hope my editors are amenable to a few extra pages...
I've got another full day of writing tomorrow, so hope to hit the mid-80,000's. All depends on how the narrative is flowing. Taking an evening off tonight as it's Valentine's Day and I doubt Louise would forgive me (who's also been at work all day) if I spent all night writing (as I do most nights).
I'll keep posting as I hit the milestones, but the end is almost in sight. Time to start thinking about the threads I'm going to leave for for book two...

Book two? Sounds interesting :) Though don't some of the other Chapters of Legend deserve the Nick Kyme treatment?
Good to see it nearing completion and thus nearing our bookshelves.
Well, it's planned as a trilogy, so you might have to wait a little bit for me to tackle any other Chapter. But who knows what the future holds? I would like to go back and do some more with Sicarius and the Ultramarines 2nd Company at some point, but these guys do get quite a lot of coverage already.
I, for one, can't wait!
A trilogy? Sounds like enough work for a couple of years yet at least :) I haven't been able to get my hands on your Black Reach book, I'll have to do some digging in one of the bigger bookshops and see if I can find it.
What I would love to see is some chapter like the White Scars get their own book, to really flesh out some of the little details in the chapter, in the way that Salamander looks like it will. But it looks like you're a little busy for a while, so I guess that we'll either have to wait and hope, or that some other BL author is inspired enough by the chapter to have a go :)
Stop teasing Nick! I want this book so bad! May cannot come fast enough for me, I want Heroes of the Space Marines to get my first fix of Salamander awesomeness. And lets face it, if Assault on Black Reach is anything to go by, it WILL be awesome!
On a related note Nick, have you considered doing the Sicarius/2nd Company story as a string of mini Novella's like Assault on Black Reach? I think the format would be really good, like an episodic serial or the like?
Cheers,
Dan
That's an interesting idea, Dan, and one I might pose to the BL powers that be. I certainly would like to return to Sicarius and 2nd Company at some point in the future, though.
Cheers Nick!
Well I was thinking about it, and have a few times since finishing AoBR, and I was wondering why the Black Library "limits" itself to novels, omnibus' and anthologies? Why shouldn't they make novellas as cheap introductions to the GW IP?
I mean, what better way to encourage people who wouldn't normally buy Black Library books to do so? £7 may seem like a lot to spend on something you may not even like, but £3 is pocket change - one less pint in the pub at lunch if you will - that sort of thing. Hell, you proved it can work with Black Reach - and it also has the added benefit of allowing the Black Library to search out and showcase new talent - if the novella doesn't do so well, then less of a risk was taken, and less money will have been spent. Couple that with less time needed to write them, less time to print them - faster turn around, faster profit, right? It makes sense from a business perspective too.
I think the format is very interesting, and you can do a lot with it. That and it would allow for a massive, diverse amount of background to be looked at in more detail - it could pave the way for less books from the Imperial perspective, and more from the perspective of the Eldar, the Tau, hell, even the Tyranids.
It can allow the authors to respond to reader feedback, and give the fans what they want. People are crying out for Tau novels? Then get an author to do a novella. People want something about the Imperial Navy? Another novella on the way. It makes sense.
Cheers,
Dan
Oh, and sorry to hijack your blog post, Nick! :)
Hey Dan,
I don't mind you highjacking the blog post at all. I think the novella format is a very interesting one, and while I'm a little reluctant to put my editor's hat on as this is supposed to be about me as a writer, I can say that there'll be more novellas in the future.
I actually think you make some pretty cogent arguments regarding the format and it certainly seems like there's a place for this in the market.
