40K Radio interview
I just want to say a huge thanks to Spencer Harding from 40K Radio. I had my interview with the internet-based station yesterday evening, and it was great.
Hopefully, I'll come across as semi-knowing what I'm talking about; what I can say for certain is that it was a very cool experience.
Spencer and I chatted on, and off, air for about an hour on all manner of topics. Don't worry, though, the interview was nice and pointy, focusing on my new and upcoming Warhammer 40,000 projects. I'm sure there are some scoops and insights in there (Spencer did very well to tease them out of my babbling, I think), and I'm very much looking forward to how it all turns out (they might even let me back to do more...).
I'm informed that the interview will be up on the 22nd of August as part of Episode 14 on the site. In the meantime, if you want to check out what else the guys at 40K Radio are up to, and maybe a little something about the team themselves then this is the address to go to:

Once again, my thanks to Spencer. I'll blog again when the interview is definitely up and I've listened to it...

Nice, sounds like you had fun.
Nick, another question for you, if you wouldn't mind answering it. I am currently working on trying my hand at a short story about the Salamanders, and the question of how the marines integrate into the tribal system of nocturne.
I remember reading that the Salamanders live amongst their people as advisors, protectors, leaders, etc. and was wondering how far does this go?
Do they take wives? Is this even possible according the Codex Astartes, or would it be forbidden. If they do, do they have families? CAN they have families?
I was hoping to start my story with a terminator teleporting into battle and as the teleporter activates the marine having a "flashback" to an event which takes place on Nocturne, which I cannot do without knowing answers to the above.
With Games Workshop/Black Library essentially giving you the reigns to the direction the chapter is taking I was wondering if they had either a) given you some direction regarding the exact nature of "clan life", or b) given you the leeway to create it for yourself?
Either way, any thoughts/advice you could give on the subject would be most appreciated.
Hey Dan,
Apologies it's taken me so long to get back to you about your Salamanders query - I've been crazy busy with one thing and another.
It's great that you're planning a Salamanders short story. All this interest in the Chapter is fantastic.
I've had a few thoughts about the world building I'll need to do in fleshing out the Salamander's background, mainly about the cities they might live in, how they interact with the human populace, their rituals, beliefs, character, mores etc. I must say, as genetically created super warriors, I don't see any Space Marine (once they've 'ascended', so to speak) taking a wife or having a family; they are bred to fight for the safety of the galaxy, originally envisaged as the Emperor's army of warriors without peer to wrest the cosmos back into the hands of humanity and thus cement/guarantee its dominance of it.
Even for a humanist Chapter like the Salamanders, this warrior role - to my mind, at least - procludes marriage, family etc and indeed any 'normal' life outside of war and battle. It's all the Space Marines really know how to do. I envisage the Salamander's role akin to that of benevolent super beings, aiding them during the Time of Trial, inspiring them with their nobility and spirit, even governing them and ensuring the planet's safety and so on. Like you said, they are advisors, protectors, icons and leaders.
Much like the Primarchs were on their native worlds, before being rediscovered by the Emperor, they are the natural choice for this role as they are more intelligent, stronger, wiser and generally thought of as leaders to be looked up to. I kind of imagine them as a little like Superman protecting Metropolis. Generally, they would be beloved and revered by the common people, even regarded as objects of awe (and fear, by the less salubrious elements of the planet).
Good luck with the short story. I hope all of those ramblings sort of help. This is certianly going to be an intriguing project for me, and, it seems, for everyone else.
